SCR Takes up Mission “Join Hands For Kerala” to reach out to flood victims of the state General Manager activates machinery for immediate relief measures


Indian Railways has taken up the task of providing free transport for aid and relief material to the flood affected, Kerala state. Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Railways has directed that all efforts be rendered to help transship relief material free, to render succour to the people of Kerala, reeling under the nature’s fury.

South Central Railway has accordingly, taken up mission “Join Hands for Kerala” to reach out to the people of the flood affected state, with a view to render relief measures o­n a war footing. Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, South Central Railway took initiative and setup a comprehensive implementing machinery all over the Zone and is personally monitoring the task. Shri John Thomas, Additional General Manager, SCR has been nominated to co-ordinate the entire relief activity and liaise with the Kerala State Government.

Teams have been formed at each departmental and divisional levels o­n the Zone, which have fanned out to organize the relief measures, including pooling of required food and material for the flood affected victims of Kerala. All the Principal Heads of Departments and Divisional Railway Managers of the six divisions – Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Nanded, Guntur and Guntakal are involved in the task, within their department and divisional jurisdictions.

Supplementing the official initiative of various departments and divisions of SCR, Officers and Staff, the SCR Women’s Welfare Organization, Trade Unions o­n the Zone also joined the massive reach out exercise with their contribution to help the needy people of Kerala.

In a short span of two days, around 60 tonnes of relief material has been gathered and dispatched from various major stations o­n the Zone, with the consignment marked to the District Magistrates of various affected districts of Kerala. The consignment comprised staple food items like Para boiled rice, Wheat flour, Pulses, Baby food, Sugar, Milk Powder, Biscuits, Oil, Salt, Tea powder, Spices, Fruit Juices, Tetra Milk, Vegetables etc., The other Major items which formed the bulk of relief material sent, include Medicines, Soaps, Blankets, Bedsheets, Towels, Pillows, Floor mats, New Clothes, Lungies, Sarees, Sanitary Napkins, Cooking utensils, Mosquito coils, Candles, Tooth brushes, Tooth Paste, Sanitizer, Brooms, Phenol, Bleaching Powder, Gum Boots, Gloves etc. Family Kits comprising of Rice, Tur Dal, Sugar, Oil, Tea Powder, Salt, Mirchi Powder, Bed sheet, Sanitizer, Towel and Sanitary Napkin were specially packed and dispatched to meet the essential needs of the flood affected families. Parcel vans have been attached by various Kerala bound trains exclusively to transport the relief material from Secunderabad, Vijayawada and Guntakal to various destinations in the affected state.

Three exclusively ear marked SLR (Luggage cum Brake Van) coaches have been run to Kerala from SCRs Headquarters area for carrying the relief material. In addition a special Parcel Van was attached to transport 24 tonnes of relief material from Vijayawada, while another Parcel Van has been run from Tirupati to transport 16 tonnes of the material. The Zone is in touch with the State Government officials to effectively plan and deliver required relief material as per requirements, at various places in Kerala.
