The Coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh is often referred as “Rice Bowl of India”. The Vijayawada is biggest city and Commercial capital of Andhra Pradesh State. The expansion of rail network between Vijayawada and coastal belt is expected to lead development of socio-economic spheres.
At present the Vijayawada-Gudivada- Bhimavaram- Narsapur; Gudivada-Machilipatnam; Bhimavaram-Nidadavolu railway lines are single and non-electrified sections. These single lines are not catering the needs of the most populous areas of the Andhra Pradesh.
With a vision to provide impetus to the development potential of coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh, Indian Railways took up the doubling and electrification project between Vijayawada-Gudivada-Bhimavaram-Narasapur and Gudivada-Machilipatnam and Bhimavaram-Nidadavolu sections in the year 2011-12 for a distance of 221 kms with an estimated cost of Rs. 1428.70 Cr.
Salient features of this project are:
Ø50% cost sharing by Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.
ØRail Vikas Nigam Ltd. is executing the project.
ØThe expenditure incurred on this project during the last 4 years up to March 2019 is is Rs. 623.06 Cr.
ØExpenditure incurred during 2018-19 is Rs 226.65 Cr.
ØTotal Expenditure incurred till now on this project is Rs 849.71 Cr.
ØProject Targeted for completion by 2020-21
ØRs. 200 Cr allotted for the year 2018-19.
The work of the entire project is planned to executed in 5 Phases
Phase-1 -Vijayawada - Moturu- 51.5 kms
Phase-2 -Moturu - Bhimavaram Town- 53.5 kms
Phase-3 -Bhimavaram Town - Nidadavolu- 49.75 kms
Phase-4 -Gudivada - Machilipatnam- 36.74 kms
Phase-5 -Bhimavaram - Narsapur- 29.48 kms
Details of the work being executed and its progress
28.66 lakh cubic meters of Earthwork has been completed. 369 Minor bridges completed in all 5 Phases. Work in another 54 Bridges is in various stages of progress. one Major Bridge is completed in Phase -1 and 4 major bridges in progress. 4 Major Bridges completed in Phase-2 and 2 in progress. One Major Bridge completed in Phase-4 and 6 in progress. 3 Major Bridges in progress in Phase-5. The double line track between Mandavalli and Kaikaluru stations - 7.00 Km, Moturu-Mandavalli – 12.00 km, Kaikaluru-Akividu – 6.0 km, Pedana-Machilipatnam – 4.50 km (Total. 29.50 km) completed. Section from Moturu – Kaikaluru for a distance of 19 Kms is targeted to complete in 2018-19.
Details of Work in Phase-2 ( Moturu - Bhimavaram Town )
The works in phase-2 i.e Moturu - Bhimavaram Town are commenced in 2013 whereas works in other phases are commenced in 2016. 4 Major bridges in Phase-2 are completed and work for 2 major bridges are in fast progress. New station buildings at Mandavalli, Kaikaluru and Akividu are completed and are at final stage in Moturu. Platform works, Cover Over platform, Foot Over Bridge work completed at Mandavalli and work in progress at Moturu. Existing facilities will suffice at Kaikaluru and Akividu stations. Yard remodelling, Circuit provision, Indoor works are in fast progress. Level crossing gate works, packing, welding and other Miscellaneous works will be completed by January 2019. With this, section between Moturu - Mandavalli - Kaikaluru - Akividu (38 kms) will be ready for Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspection by February 2019 which facilitates commission of the above section by March 2019.
Details of Work in Phase- 1 , 3, 4 & 5
Earth Works, Blanketing, Ballast works, Minor Bridges, Major Bridges and Over Head Equipment (OHE) works are commenced and works are being taken up in phased manner by different agencies. Section between Vijayawada - Moturu (Phase-1) is targeted for completion by October, 2019. Sections between Gudivada - Machilipatnam (Phase-4), Bhimavaram - Narsapur (Phase-5), Bhimavaram Town - Nidadavolu (Phase-3) is targeted for completion by January, 2020.
