Fire in Pantry Car of Yesvantapur-Tatanagar Express near Gollaprolu in Rajahmundry – Visakhapatnam Section leads to regulation of train services. Prompt measures enable safety and fast restoration of train operations

      

An incident of fire in pantry car of Train No. 12890 Yesvantapur – Tatanagar Express occurred at around 01.47 hrs of 5th March, 2019 (today) near Gollaprolu Railway Station o­n the Rajahmundry – Visakhapatnam section of Vijayawada Division. Upon noticing the flames, the o­nboard railway staff brought the train immediately to halt at Gollaprolu. Action was immediately taken to detach the Pantry Car from other compartments o­n both the sides of the affected train by 02.00 hrs, so as to ensure that the fire does not spread and all passengers remain safe. As a precaution, o­ne coach of the train (S1 Coach) adjacent to the pantry car was also detached.

Simultaneously, information was relayed to the local fire authorities and a fire engine rushed to the spot by about 02.10 hrs to extinguish the fire. In the meanwhile, the overhead electrical equipment (Overhead Power Supply for Electric Locomotives) was switched off as a safety measure and train services in both the directions were stopped. A Railway Medical Relief Van and Accident Relief Train were dispatched to Gollaprolu from Rajahmundry. Senior Officials of Vijayawada Division also rushed to the spot to undertake restoration measures o­n war footing and bring about normalcy in train operations. The entire section (both up and down Railway Lines) were restored for normal train movements by 06.00 hrs. The affected train later continued o­n its journey, with a coach planned to be attached at Visakhapatnam to accommodate the passengers of S1 coach of the train.

Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, South Central Railway personally monitored the situation each minute from SCR’s headquarters at Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad before air dashing to the spot of the fire mishap to take a firsthand account of the incident and review the steps taken for bringing about normal train movements at the earliest. The Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Chief Safety Officer, Chief Rolling Stock Engineer and Chief Electrical Service Engineer, SCR accompanied the General Manager. A departmental committee has been constituted to enquire into the fire mishap.

Shri John Thomas, Additional General Manager, SCR and other senior officials of the Zone remained stationed at the emergency control office at SCR’s Hqrs at Secunderabad to continuously keep a tab o­n the handling of restoration works, providing relief to passengers to meet their immediate needs and ensure smooth movement of trains which were regulated at various locations in the section.
