South Central Railway has loaded 9.44 Million Tonnes (MTs) of Freight traffic in the Month of March, 2017, around 8.36% more as compared to the same month of March in 2016. This rise in performance reversed the sluggish trend for the earlier months on account of fall in imports and market conditions.
The loading also contributed to maximize SCR’s freight loading for the financial year 2016-17 which reached to 96.83 MTs. The annual revenue of SCR, generated on freight traffic was to the tune of Rs. 7934.7 Cr for the year 2016-17.
During 2016-17 the loading of Iron Ore on SCR was to the extent of 0.63 MTs, Raw Material for Steel Plants was 3.18 MTs (+13.6% over last year), Coal loading was to the extent of 52.65 MTs and loading of other goods was 4.88 MTs.
The initiatives undertaken to boost freight traffic on the Zone in 2016-17 include-
ØOpening of 6 freight terminals. These are – 1 terminal served by Banaganapalle station of Guntakal Division; 2 private terminals, served by Shankarpalli station on Secunderabad Division and Narsingapalli on Vijayawada Division; 3 private sidings opened at Bugganapalli in Guntakal Division, Janpahad in Guntur Division and Tandur in Secunderabad Division.
ØNew customers were tapped for loading onions on Nanded Division, Timber waste from Jagityal, Fertilizer and Fodder from Kakinada, Containers from Eluru and Cement from Chittapur.
ØVarious steps have been undertaken to increase the average speed of goods trains by 20%, resulting in improved wagon turn around.
ØHandling of rakes (goods train) at goods terminals improved by 8%.
Shri Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, SCR has chalked out elaborate plans and reviewed all the aspects pertaining to freight loading on the Zone on a continuous basis. He also spelt out to SCR officials, the need to optimize freight loading in the current fiscal 2017-18, from the beginning of the year, meeting the needs of customers and reaching out to new avenues of freight business.
