A Birds eye View of Wagon Work Shop
1.0 BRIEF HISTORY:


| This Repair Workshop, was sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways in the year 1973 at an estimated cost of Rs 26 Crores with an infrastructure to repair 10,000 FW units per year. The foundation stone was laid by Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India on 07.04.1974 and inaugurated on 16-07-1976 by Shri K.S.Rajan, General Manager, South Central Railway to facilitate periodic overhauling of wagons to keep them fit for traffic use. | |

| This is one of the Premier Workshops and first modern workshop on Indian Railways planned to cater to repairs of different classes of Broad Gauge Wagons. Annual output capacity is 5,280 Vehicle Units approximately. | 
| This workshop is located within a periphery of 12 km from the historical city of VIJAYAWADA, which lies on the banks of holy river KRISHNA, encircled by prominent historical places like Kondapalli Fort, Vundavalli Caves and Akkanna Madanna Caves, Amaravathi etc.. | 2. 3. CORE ACTIVITY: The Core activity of this Workshop is Periodical Overhauling of Goods Wagons used for transportation of different material ranging from raw materials such as Iron Ore, manganese, fuels like Coal, Petroleum Products, finished products like Iron, Steel, besides Food grains. Different wagons are used for transporting different types of material, depending upon the size, shape and nature of protection required during the course of transportation. Some of the important types of wagons attended here are shown below: | Open wagons (TOP) used for Raw materials etc. (BOXN, BOXC etc.) | | | Covered Wagons used for Food Grains, Cement etc. (BCN, BCX etc.) | Flat Wagons used for Iron, Steel products, containers (BRN, BFKN etc.) | | | Tankers used for transportation of Petroleum Products, Naptha, Ammonia, Phosphorus etc. (BTPN, BTPH etc.) | Open wagons with Rapid Bottom Discharge System primarily used for Coal and iron Ore (BOBR etc.) | | | Open Wagon with Side (Controlled) Discharge used for unloading ballast on the railway tracks (BOBY etc.) | 4. PERFORMANCE INDICES Our Workshop has an enviable record of achieving the set targets consistently and even exceeding the targets set by the Railway Board on a number of occasions - details speak for themselves.  5. Human Resources Development Human resources has been the key factor in the consistent outstanding performance of this workshop over the years. Staff are trained periodically in the Training Centre attached to our Shops to update their knowledge and skills. This will improve the productivity of the staff contributing to the overall performance of the workshop |

Staff are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as Civil Defense, Scouts, St. John Ambulance servce etc. Health checks and immunisation of the staff are a also regular feature of this shops, to ensure good health. | | | | | 6. Care for Environment: This Workshop has the proud distinction of having the highest ratio of green cover vis-a-vis the total area, in any industrial unit or establishment in and around Vijayawada. Officers and staff participate in Swatch Bharat regularly to maintain the surroundings neat and clean. The upkeep of these gardens will speak for themselves 7. Welfare Activities. As part of welfare activity a number of facilities are provided to our staff such as, subsidised canteen, first aid centre, staff rest rooms separately for Ladies and Gents, Creche for infants, washing facilities, toilets, drinking water facilities etc. which are mandatory as per Factory Act. Awards and commendations: Since the first batch of wagons turned out during 1976, this workshop received a number of commendations and certifications. One of the high lights of these is the award by Railway Board in respect of designing GAURD friendly Brake Van during an All India Level Competition.
