7.Maintenance of Electric Locos in Diesel Loco Sheds:
With progressive Railway Electrification over Indian Railways the fleet of electric locomotives is increasing and at the same time gradual phasing of Diesel locos is taking place. As per Rly.Board policy, infrastructure facilities available in diesel sheds are to be utilized for maintenance of Electric locos on depletion of Diesel locos.
Accordingly Electric locos being maintained at Diesel loco sheds and the details are:
DSL Shed | Present Holding | Commenced from |
DSL/GTL | 130 WAG7 | DEC’2018 |
DSL/KZJ | 85 WAG7 | FEB’2019 |
DSL/GY | 70 WAG9 | OCT’2018 |
Total | 285 locos | |

ØFeatures available in Diesel locos:
1.Auxiliary Power Unit(APU):
APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) is a simple device consisting of Small Diesel Engine, Compressor and 3 Phase Alternator. Statistics reveal that 50% of the run time of a goods train is idling that consumes considerable fuel and unwarranted, resulting in undesirable emissions. To avoid this, APU has been installed on diesel locomotives to maintain vital operational parameter of Locomotive i.e. MR pressure, Battery Voltage etc. and to facilitate shutdown of Main Engine so as to effect concomitant fuel savings. APU system saves approximately 14 litres per hour by avoiding idling of main-engine. By APU utilization, a saving of 79.502 kL HSD oil at total cost of Rs.0.79 Cr. is achieved from Apr’2023 to June’2023.
2.Remote Monitoring of Locomotive and Trains system(REMMLOT):
Remote Monitoring of Locomotive and Trains(REMMLOT)is a system that provides the locomotive health and performance online which improves effective operation and maintenance of locomotive. REMMLOT facilitates information includes locomotive location, operational parameters, health status, fuel level data, fault logs related information, life-time counters and event recorder data. Automatic alerts of critical faults can be received to respective sheds.
3.Distributed Power Control System (DPCS):
DPCS allows multiple locomotives to be used at different locations over entire train consist. Such a system leverages the existing rolling stock and allows much longer trains to be run by minor up gradation of the locomotives. Simultaneous repetition & execution of commands, given by “Master” locomotive to “Remote” locomotive by a wireless link(RF communication), such as traction, braking, dynamic braking or any other functions performed by the loco pilot of the master unit and duplicated (transmitted) in “Remote” units.
At present, 37 WDG4/WDG4D locos are fitted with DPCS.
4.Train Collision Avoidance System(TCAS):
Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system meant to provide protection to trains against Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), excessive speed and collisions. TCAS provides continuous update of Movement Authority (distance up to which the train is permitted to travel without danger).
Hence during unsafe situations when brake application is necessitated, and the crew has either failed to do so, or is not in position to do so, automatic brake application shall take place. TCAS has additional features to display information like speed, location, distance to signal ahead, Signal aspects etc. in loco Pilot’s cab and generation of Auto and Manual SOS messages (Distress messages) from Loco as well as Station unit in case of emergency situation.
At present, 60 ALCO Diesel locos are fitted with TCAS.
