Ticket Checking On-Board Trains goes Hi-Tech on SCR Checking Staff provided with Hand Held Terminals (HHTs) for Live Vacancy status on Berths Availability

South Central Railway (SCR) achieved another milestone in its journey on the path to attain Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Digital India Mission. Acting upon the directives of Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of Railways and Coal, SCR has taken initiative to implement the use of high-end technology based Hand Held Terminals (HHTs) on-board the trains. The HHTs will enable the ticket checking staff to verify status of reserved passengers list of the entire train, get to know on the live status of vacant berths and allot the vacant berths between identified destinations to passengers in a wholly transparent manner.

The HHTs has been recently introduced on Indian Railways to cater to 51 Rajdhani & Shatabdi Express trains and South Central Railway is one amongst the identified Zone to implement this computer based passenger centric project on a pilot basis. Under this project, 40 HHTs have been provided to the ticket checking staff (TCs) on SCR, who work by the select trains.

The transformative measure of introducing HHTs to enable check and monitor the live vacancy status aboard the train which is expected to bring-in a revolutionary change in the standards of customer services, took off with Shri Amit Varadan, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad Division. The Divisional Railway Manager handed over the first set of HTT instruments to the Ticket checking staff (TCs) on-duty by Train No. 12026/12025 Secunderabad - Pune - Secunderabad Shatabdi Express at Secunderabad Railway Station today i.e., 10thJanuary, 2019.

The HHTs will be available with the ticket checking staff in the following trains which originate/terminate/pass through South Central Railway.

üTrain No. 12025/12026 Pune - Secunderabad - Pune Shatabdi Express.

üTrain No. 12437/12438 Secunderabad - Hazrat Nizamuddin - Secunderabad Rajdhani Express.

üTrain No. 12433/12434 Chennai Central - Hazrat Nizamuddin - Chennai Central Rajdhani Express.

üTrain No. 22691/22692 KSR Bengaluru - Hazrat Nizamuddin - KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express.

Advantages of Hand Held Terminals

ØThe Ticket checking staff (TCs) can easily check the tickets of passengers and mark their occupation of the allotted accommodation. Accordingly, any vacancies that arise during the journey can immediately come to notice of the TCs who will be able to allot the same to needy passengers on train.  Passengers will benefit from prompt allotment of vacant berths in the course of journey.

ØPassengers will get real-time information about vacant berths at stations enroute. Berths can be allotted for the needy passengers in the next remote location in case of vacant accommodation, even when the train is in running condition.

ØAs the after chart cancellations are sent on an hourly basis to the Hand Held Terminal, fraudulent travel can be easily detected.

ØReal-time charting will ensure greater transparency in allotment of berths, especially in case of vacant accommodation.

ØThe facility to enable live updates of passenger occupancy on train will ease upgrading/downgrading of reserved accommodation already booked

ØCalculation of occupancy for food and bedrolls can be made instantly.

ØRefund, if any, can be processed quickly as real-time data of vacancy position and occupancy is connected with PRS software.

ØCommunication between TCs of different coaches aboard the trains to clear RAC will be easy and quick.

ØCommunication by TCs with Station staff will become easier in case of any requirement by passengers in coaches.

ØAn eco-friendly move, the Hand Held Terminals will replace paper charts presently used by TCs on-board.
