Tirupati is the most popular pilgrim destination in India, the abode of Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala. Tirupati Railway Station is a witness to continuous flow of lakhs of pilgrims all round the year from all over the India. Especially on the auspicious occasions the station caters to the needs of extra-ordinary rush of traffic running into lakhs of passengers. Average footfall per day at the station is about 75,000 passengers. Tirupati Railway Station is a NSG2 category station (erstwhile A1 category station). Ministry of Railways under took a special mission to provide enhanced passenger comforts at 24 stations over Indian Railways in association with Ministry of Tourism on 50-50 cost sharing basis. Tirupati is one of the Stations identified by the Ministry of Railways to provide up graded facilities to meet the comforts of Railway passengers of all the categories.
In view of the needs of ever growing pilgrim passengers, South Central Railway took special initiatives and upgraded passenger amenities have been provided with an estimated cost of Rs. 11Crore at Tirupati Railway Station, some of them matching with 5 star amenities. These facilities include provision of a new open Waiting hall on Platforms 4&5 with a seating capacity of 210 in the 1200 square meter area. The open waiting hall is also provided with High speed Wi-fi and Led TV facilities. Another new facility is improved and spacious new clock room on platform No.1 with a 100 Sq.meter area. 50 numbers of steel type racks have provided for parking the luggage of pilgrims. Improvements have been also made to the existing booking office, announcement and display boards etc.
In addition, one premium lounge has also been developed on Platform No.1 with state of the art facilities with an approximate cost of Rs 1.06 Crore. Host of facilities are available for rail users in this lounge developed in 350 Sq.meters area. This includes comfortable waiting facility with spacious separate rooms for ladies and gents with a capacity of 53 seats, free Internet, comfortable seating, cold and hot beverages, News Papers / Magazines, TV / Instrumental Music, Wash Room, Locker / Luggage rack etc.
Tirupati Station Redevelopment:
Tender for redevelopment of Tirupati station was invited by National Buildings Construction Corporation, India (NBCC). The NBCC is a blue-chip Government of India Navratna enterprise and a Central Public Sectorundertaking which trades publicly in the market. Tirupati Railway Station is proposed for redevelopment with an expenditure of Rs.400 Cr on EPC basis. The NBCC will carry out all the activities from design, Procurement, Construction, Commissioning and hand over the project to the Railways. The revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for redevelopment of Tirupati Railway Station is under preparation by NBCC and tenders will be invited after submission of revised DPR. The detailed proposals of Station redevelopment are under discussion with respective authorities like Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, Municipal Corporation and Government of Andhra Pradesh for early resolution to take up redevelopment of Tirupati station.
