Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) is celebrated in India on 26 November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly of India on that day in 1949. The Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950.
The Government of India declared 26 November as Constitution Day in 2015, in tune with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution. Carrying this initiative forward, the Union Government decided to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the adoption of Constitution of India on 26th November, 2019 and hold year long activities culminating on 26th November, 2020.
As part of the celebration of Constitution Day, an extensive campaign is being undertaken on the Railways. Besides reading out of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution at Zonal and all Divisional Headquarters including in the offices and other establishments today, SCR has drawn a yearlong plan to focus on Citizens duties including fundamental duties as enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The calendar of events include holding of rallies, walks, runs, talks, conferences, seminars, quiz contests, debates etc., throughout the year. The Citizen duties will also be highlighted amongst the travelling public in trains.
