· Indian Railways gives flexibility to IRCTC to customize Menu to accommodate regional/seasonal preferences, etc
· Flexibility applicable to both Prepaid Trains (like Rajdhani Trains) and also Mail Express trains
Indian Railways has been taking several measures to meet the tastes of its diverse passengers from all regions of the country. In this direction, another significant step has been taken by the Railways to give flexibility to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to include items of regional cuisines / seasonal delicacies, etc. IRCTC will also have the flexibility to serve different menus like catering to different groups of passengers (diabetic food, baby food, healthy food option like those based on Millets, etc) and also as per the food requirements during the festivals.
This will give significant flexibility to accommodate as well promote regional delicacies across various trains travelling across the length and breadth of the country. Importantly, this flexibility has been extended to not only prepaid trains (like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, etc) and Mail / Express Trains but also for Standard as well as Ala-carte catering options for the benefit of the passengers.
Accordingly, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) – the Indian Railways Subsidiary handling its Catering services – has been given the flexibility as follows:
1. For prepaid trains in which catering charges are included in the passenger fare like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains, the menu shall be decided by IRCTC within the tariff already notified. Branded food items on MRP & sale of a-la-carte items (the menu and tariff decided by IRCTC) are also permitted.
2. For other Mail/Express trains, menu of budget segment items like standard meals shall be decided by IRCTC within the fixed tariff already notified. Menu and tariff of Janata meals shall remain unchanged. Further, Branded food items on MRP & sale of a-la-carte items (the menu and tariff decided by IRCTC) are also permitted.
In this entire process, appropriate care will be taken so as to ensure that Upgradation in quality and standards of food and service will be maintained, while necessary safeguards will be taken to avoid frequent & undue changes, as well as usage of inferior brands. The menu will be commensurate with the tariff and will be pre-notified for information of passengers.
The SCR General Manager, Shri Arun Kumar Jain stated that this is another important measure which can not only give significant fillip to regional cuisines but also help in meeting diverse food preferences of rail passengers. He also advised IRCTC Officials to maintain the top standard in quality of food items so as to live up to the expectations of the rail users.
