SCR conducts Month Long Intensive Drive to prevent Carriage of Inflammable Materials in Railway Premises

South Central Railway has undertaken several awareness programs in order to avoid carriage of inflammable articles in railway premises. These steps were taken well in advance before Diwali Season to create awareness among the rail users. In addition to this, SCR has conducted month long intensive drive starting from 18thOctober to 16th November, 2023 in which both awareness programs are conducted as well as checks were conducted to penalize the violators.

As per Sections 67, 164, and 165 of the Railway Act 1989, carrying flammable and explosive articles on railways constitutes a punishable offence, with penalties of up to ₹1,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both, in addition to being responsible for any loss, injury, or damage caused. It has been cautioned that rail users are not supposed to carry fire crackers or any other explosive / inflammable articles such as raw materials for fire crackers, Gas Cylinder, Petrol / Diesel / Kerosene, Stoves, Lantern, Explosive Chemical Powder, acids and any  other detonating substances as luggage / parcel with them in railway premises or  in the train compartments.

As part of the awareness programs, extensive publicity has been given in Social Media, Print & Electronic media through press releases, display advertisements & designed tweets, posting banners, playing videos, distributing leaflets, pasting stickers, posters at railway stations, trains and other public places. In addition, regular announcements were made at Stations to sensitize the rail passengers.

Awareness meetings were also conducted with Parcel Van Lease holders & their staff to make them aware about the consequences of carrying inflammable articles. Awareness meetings were also conducted with Parcel staff, Parcel & Licensed porters, catering staff of the stations, pantry car staff, OBHS staff, outsourced employees etc. In addition, awareness campaigns were also conducted involving rail users and passengers. All these measures have resulted in alertness among the rail users with regards to safety of the railway assets.

During the 30 days period from 18thOctober to 16th November, 2023, the Zone has conducted 1540 checks at different railway stations, 1028 checks in various trains, 186 checks at other railway premises like yards, washing lines etc. During the checks, 7 cases were booked against the violators carrying fire crackers and inflammable articles.
