1. The Railway stations are classified into 7 categories viz., A1, A, B, C, D, E & F as per the stations revenue and importance from Commercial angle.
2. As per the policy of the Ministry of Indian Railways, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC Ltd.) was incorporated as an extended arm of Indian Railways with an objective to upgrade, professionalise and manage the catering and hospitality services at stations, on trains and to promote domestic and international tourism through development of hotels.
2.1 All the static Catering units at A, B & C category stations and all Mobile Units (Pantry Car services) have handed over to Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC Ltd.), New Delhi on this Railway during the years 2004-05.
3. Provision of platform stalls and refreshment rooms at all D, E & F category stations, however, is being done by the South Central Railway.
4. The catering facilities at stations are divided into major and minor units as per the catering policy of Indian Railways viz.
I.The major units include:
i)Food courts and food plazas at all stations, refreshment rooms at A1 and A category stations.
ii)Fast food units at all category stations.
iii)All mobile catering units i.e., Pantry car services.
iv)Train side vending units.
v)Automatic Vending Machines (AVMs) at all categories of stations.
II.The minor units include:
i)Trolleys and stalls at all A1, A, B & C categories of stations excluding food plazas and food courts.
ii)Restaurants, refreshment rooms at B & C categories of stations.
iii)All catering units at D, E & F categories of stations except AVMs, Food Plazas & Food Courts.
5. I.Allotment procedure:
a)Major units through 2 packet tendering system.
b)All General Minor Units (GMU) at all A1, A, B & C category stations will be allotted through 2 packet tendering system.
c)All Special Minor Units (SMU) i.e., minor units for reserved categories at all A1, A, B & C category stations will be allotted through calling applications.
d)All Minor Units at all D, E & F category stations will be allotted through calling applications.
II. There is no reservation for major units of A1, A, B & C category stations units and mobile units.
Reservation is provided for in allotment of catering units as under:
i)There is 25% reservation for Minor units in A1, A, B & C category stations with the following break up:
a) Scheduled Castes - 6%
b) Scheduled Tribes - 4%
c) People below poverty line - 4%
d) Women including war widows and
windows of Railway employees - 3%
e) Other backward classes - 3%
f) Minorities - 3%
g) Physically handicapped person - 2%
ii)For Minor catering units at all D, E & F category stations:
a) Scheduled Castes -12%
b) Scheduled Tribes - 8%
c) Other backward classes -20%
d) Minorities -9.5%
In each category, 10% reservation will be for freedom fighters and women including war widows and widows of Railway employees and 2% reservation will be for physically and mentally challenged persons.
